Frequently Asked Questions
Why see a Clinical Sexologist/Psychosexual & Relationship Therapist?
Many individuals and couples will see a therapist for a range of different psychosexual and relationship issues. Most individuals who seek therapy are generally successful people who may be troubled by feelings, behaviours, thoughts or concerns that currently prevent them from functioning, preventing them from feeling happy and fulfilled in their lives.
Life changes, new events or circumstances and changes in relationships or work often trigger difficulties that can be troubling. Alternatively, some people may have been struggling with difficult memories or behaviours over a long period of time and decide that it is time to get some help.
Psychosexual & Relationship Therapists are qualified counsellors, doctors or healthcare professionals who have completed specialist training (usually two years) in helping people with problems relating to sex & relationships.
What should I expect?
It is understandable if you feel uncomfortable, anxious or nervous when talking to a new person about sensitive personal information. As a therapist through our training and part of our continued professional development we have therapy, I know what it is like to sit on the other side of the couch.
I have an open and collaborative approach in working with you to address your difficulties. In the first session, I will talk with you to gain a full picture of your current concerns and circumstances, and any related factors and history. You may be asked to complete one or more questionnaires to assess your situation. I will also explain how I work and establish some guidelines for our sessions together. Together we devise the plan that sits most comfortably with you. There will be an opportunity to ask any questions you may have. I will devise the therapy plan that is right for you. The sessions are held in the strictest confidence.
